Split by hand, so no two are the same

Our slate is cleft rather than sawn wherever the piece allows it, which is why the edges are irregular and the shade varies from one board to the next. Cast stone is used where a shape has to repeat exactly, and brass is left unlacquered so it dulls honestly instead of flaking. We keep the range deliberately small — every piece has to earn its place on a counter that gets used.
